From a very young age, Diego was linked to the mountains, his father worked at the Cotopaxi Refuge in the 1980s. At just 2 years old, Diego accompanied his parents to the Refuge. From that moment on, his father’s mountain heritage was marked on him. . Later Diego completed his studies to enter the university in Quito obtaining the Title of National Tourism Guide of Ecuador. With only 18 years of age Diego reaches the summit of Cotopaxi to pay for his university studies combined with guiding to small mountains and also to Cotopaxi.

Diego, with only 20 years of age, leads successful groups to all the highest peaks in Ecuador, including Cotopaxi and Chimborazo, climbing each mountain more than 500 times. His passion for learning and growing has led him to form his own company, the dream of his Father Pedro Cumbajin. Diego is a lover of photography, mountains and Ecuadorian culture, speaks Spanish and English fluently.

As a complement to his 3 years of university studies as a Tourist Guide, he has attended important courses, such as:

  • Naturalist Guide Course of the Cotopaxi National Park, El Boliche Recreation Area, Chimborazo Faunal Reserve and Los Ilinizas Ecological Reserve. Dictated by the Ministry of Tourism and the Environment. (April 2005).
  • First aid course oriented mountain rescue in wild areas, event organized by the Ecuadorian Red Cross and the Tungurahua Fire Department in April 2013.
  • Course and Exam for Mountain Guides of Ecuador dictated by ASEGUIM (Ecuadorian Association of Mountain Guides), in April 2018, where he successfully passed all disciplines such as: crevasse rescue, rock and ice climbing, orienteering in the mountains.
