Easy 2-day expedition to start the acclimatization process for high mountains.

The Ilinizas constitute two twin mountains, Iliniza Norte with 5,126 m and Iliniza Sur with 5,300 m. In this case, Iliniza Norte is a rocky peak that is rarely covered in snow and is lower in elevation. Its ascent requires technical mountain equipment and by a professional guide, this mountain is part of the so-called Avenue of the 9 Volcanoes in the Machachi valley.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1

Quito (2,800 m) – Summit of the North Iliniza Volcano (5,126 m) – Return to Quito

Detailed Itinerary

We leave Quito early in the morning at 05:00 and we will drive south along the Avenida de los Volcanes, we will pass through the town of “Chaupi”, we will continue driving until we reach the parking lot “La Virgen” 3,900 m, approximately 2 hours, with all our climbing equipment ready, we will continue along the path to the Nuevos Horizontes Refuge 4,750 m, approximately 3 hours, once here we will rest and enjoy hot drinks, then we will head towards the summit of Iliniza Norte that measures 5,126 m, without first go through some rocky stretches and steep sections. Once at the summit we can enjoy and admire the beauty of the surroundings, the return will be made by another route and by the ridge that connects us to the “La Virgen” parking lot, it will take about 2 hours and in the afternoon return to Quito.
