Technical climbing of 2 days, requires experience in handling rope, screw and cramponage.

Iliniza Sur measures 5,263 m, to reach its summit there are sections of up to 70 degrees of inclination, it requires advanced knowledge of technical climbing, rope management and screws, its ascent lasts approximately 4 hours from the Refuge to the summit, cataloged as one of the most technical climbs in Ecuador.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1

Quito (2,800 m) – Nuevos Horizontes Refuge (4,750 m)

Day 2

Nuevos Horizontes Refuge – Summit of the South Iliniza Volcano (5,263 m) – Return Quito

Detailed Itinerary

We will leave Quito in the morning at 09:00 am and we will drive along the Panamericana, we will go through Chaupi until we reach the parking lot of LA VIRGEN located at 3,900 m, approximately 2 hours, after packing we will start a walk of around 3 hours to the “Nuevos Horizontes” Refuge located at 4,750 m, where we will have lunch and rest for the rest of the afternoon, until dinner.

The alarm will sound at 02:00 am, time to wake up, after packing and having breakfast, we will begin the ascent through a rocky section that ends in a somewhat steep gutter, after climbing we will arrive at the mountain glacier, here we will prepare crampons, rope and ice ax, technical climbing consists of several lengths of rope and sometimes steep sections of between 40 and 70 degrees of inclination but this will depend on the snow and ice conditions. Finally we will reach the crest and then reach the summit of Iliniza Sur which It measures 5,263m, after several photos and seeing the Cotopaxi, Chimborazo and more mountains we will return by the same route using at least 3 rappels to descend to the base of the mountain and later to the Refuge once there, we will have hot drinks, we will pack and return to the parking to finally return to Quito.
